An Alternative Vision of Migration

Óscar Puente, the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has expressed his concerns about the positions adopted by the right in relation to migration. In a recent interview, he stated that these ideas, influenced by the far right, present migration as a problem, when in reality it represents a valuable opportunity.

The Need for a Collective Approach

Puente stressed that migration should be considered from a more generous and forward-looking perspective. ‘For a European continent with an aging population and a declining birthrate, migration can be a resource’ he said, urging to see it as a solution and not as an obstacle.

Criticism of the Popular Party

The minister criticized the Popular Party (PP) for its lack of concrete proposals to manage immigration, urging it to adopt a ‘State position’. He pointed out that it is not enough to point to the Government, since the issue of immigration requires a European and collaborative approach.

The Dynamics of Autonomous Governments

Puente also pointed out that the autonomies have become entities that limit themselves to asking for funding without properly implementing the available resources. Regarding the Canary Islands, he emphasized that the problem is not the lack of money, but the low execution of the assigned projects.

Commitment to Viability

The minister insisted that no more funds will be allocated to agreements that cannot be implemented. ‘We must end the practice of asking for money for projects that are not ready’, he declared, emphasizing the importance of the effective execution of resources.

Relations between the Government and the Canary Islands

In another matter, Puente commented on the visit of the Minister of the Interior and the President of the Generalitat to Lanzarote, clarifying that it was not about official matters, but was done in a friendly atmosphere. He encouraged the Canarian Coalition to focus on its own allies before criticizing the Government of Spain.

Conclusion: A Shared Future

With all this, Puente reiterated that migration must be addressed as a collective challenge that can bring benefits to society. At a time when Europe is facing an aging population, it is crucial to see diversity as a source of enrichment and not as a problem.
