A Significant Transformation
January 8th marked a defining moment for Tarragona Cathedral with the appointment of ten new canons, a decision taken by Archbishop Joan Planellas. This action not only expands the Chapter, which now has 23 members, but also responds to the need to serve a growing number of faithful during the Jubilee Year of Hope.
Objectives of the New Composition
According to sources in the archdiocese, this change seeks to promote pastoral renewal in the cathedral. The main intention is to guarantee more efficient and accessible spiritual care for parishioners, an aspect that Archbishop Planellas has highlighted as essential for the community.
Selection of the New Canons
The decision was made after an extraordinary session of the Chapter held on January 7. The rectors of the parishes of Tarragona have been chosen for their organizational potential and ability to provide spiritual care effectively.
Taking Possession Ceremony
Although the appointment was formalized on Wednesday, the official inauguration ceremony of the new canons will take place on January 21, within the framework of the Solemnity dedicated to Saints Fructuosus, Augurius and Eulogius.
List of New Canons
The newly appointed canons include prominent figures such as Monsignor Santiago Soro Roca, vicar general of the archdiocese, and other rectors of various parishes in the city, including: Monsignor Ignasi Durany Pich of Sant Francesc d’Assís, Monsignor Joan Àguila Chavero and Monsignor Víctor Mosquera Ramos, among others.
Impulse to Community Life
This new Chapter of Canons not only symbolizes a structural change, but also represents a renewed commitment to the community, with the aim of better responding to the spiritual needs of the faithful and fostering a more active and vibrant community life in Tarragona.
