Recently, an imposing structure has emerged in the waters in front of the beaches of Tarragona, captivating the attention of premises and tourists. The Platform for Operations, which has become a new photographic point of interest, hides a very specific mission related to the controversial Castor project.
Dismantling a controversial project
The noble resolve, with a height of 150 meters, has a responsibility to seal the Castor’s underwater wells, a project that was stopped in 2013 due to its association with multiple earthquakes in the region. In total, 37 sealing will be executed in 13 wells, with the aim of ending one of the most controversial chapters in the energy history of Spain.

The process will involve both mechanical perforation and controlled detonations to ensure effective seal. This operation will take place about 1,600 meters deep, a task that is expected to be complex and requires a high level of coordination.

The City Council of Alcanar, together with the Platform in Defense of the Terres del Sénia, has expressed concern about the lack of transparency in the process of dismantling. With a firm commitment to control, these organizations have requested detailed information on the possible environmental impacts derived from the operations.

Authorities have warned of possible hydrocarbon spills and have strictly monitored the seismographs to monitor the seismic activity. Transparency in the project budget, which is currently declared confidential, is also a central point of its demands.
