A new service on the horizon
Recently, the Parliament of Catalonia has given the green light to an initiative that seeks to establish nighttime connections between several towns in Anoia, Bages and Osona with the city of Barcelona. This proposal, which has received unanimous support from the CUP, comes from the voices of the municipalist candidacies of the pro-independence left, such as Capgirem Vic and Poble Actiu, who have pointed out the government’s lack of attention to the region’s transport needs.
Context and needs of the territory
At the end of April 2023, Parliament had already approved a proposal to improve night transport in the regions involved, but the promises seem to have fallen into oblivion. At a time when connections between Igualada and Lleida are essential for many residents, the dependence on the private vehicle becomes evident, with dozens of citizens organizing every Sunday to share cars to the capital of Segrià.
The value of parliamentary proposals
The proposed resolutions presented to Parliament not only represent the desire to improve intercity transport, but also demonstrate a political consensus that, ideally, should be translated into concrete actions. However, the Generalitat has indicated that it has no plans to modify transport services until 2028, a decision that contradicts the parliamentary agreement and generates frustration among citizens.
Disconnection between institutions and citizens
In Igualada, the response to these initiatives has been disappointing. The parliamentary resolutions seem to have little influence on the public debate, with little media coverage and limited support from local authorities. The creation of night bus lines could provide a safe alternative for those who need to travel to Barcelona, but the authorities seem to remain indifferent to these needs.
Political expectations and responsibilities
The proposal to improve night-time interurban transport, which has been well received in Parliament, should be firmly defended by the Igualada City Council. The lack of action by the council is disconcerting, especially considering that many of its members have voted in favour of these initiatives at parliamentary level.
A worrying silence
The inactivity of local political figures such as Mayor Jordi Cuadras and PSC deputy Jordi Riba, who have not publicly defended this need, raises doubts about their commitment to the interests of the citizens. It is difficult to understand how such a relevant issue for the community can be ignored.
An uncertain future
The current situation highlights a disconnect between political promises and the reality experienced by citizens. It is urgent that local representatives commit to defending the right to adequate and accessible public transport, beyond their personal political ambitions. Mobility is a right, and the citizens of Anoia deserve to be heard and cared for.
