An unprecedented initiative

The Housing Agency of Catalonia has announced a significant acquisition of 743 homes for social rent, with an investment that rises to 71.26 million euros. This operation will be formalized in the coming days, marking a decisive step in the government’s housing policy.

Benefits for vulnerable families

The beneficiaries of these new homes will mainly be those families who, as a result of mortgage executions, have lost their flats but who currently reside on rent thanks to the RETER program. This agency initiative allows tenants to pay a rent adjusted to their income, while the agency is paying for the owners.

Geographic distribution of homes

According to the data provided by the Generalitat, most of these new homes will be located in the Vegueria de Barcelona, with a total of 487 floors. Other areas that will also benefit from this acquisition include Lleida with 59 homes, the Camp de Tarragona with 55, Girona with 54, Central Catalonia with 42, the Penedès with 34, the Terres de l’Ebre with 6, and the Alt Pirineu and Aran with 5.

Government Commitment to Housing

The Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, Sílvia Paneque, emphasized the importance of this operation, announced in February, ensuring that the tenants will continue to live on their flats with the same contractual conditions they had previously. Paneque emphasized that, with this purchase, seeks not only to protect the rights of tenants, but also to increase the official housing park.

A strategy for a sustainable future

This initiative is not only a response to the housing crisis, it also involves more efficient management of resources by the housing agency. Paneque mentioned that the redistribution of resources would enhance other housing policies, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to access to decent housing for all.
