The Arrival of the New National Left

The Catalan political scene is preparing for a significant change with the presentation of Nova Esquerra Nacional, a new movement that seeks to revitalize the bases of ERC. At an event held in Barcelona, approximately 600 people followed the event online, where various spokespeople set out their vision for the future of the party.

New Voices and Different Perspectives

The presentation included the interventions of key figures such as Teresa Jordà, Marc Aloy, Alba Camps and Xavier Godàs. They all agreed on the need for a change in leadership and ideas, emphasizing that the project is not based on a single person, but on a set of principles and values. Jordà stated that the names of the future candidates have not yet been decided, emphasizing the importance of building a collective project.

An Alliance of Voices

Among those attending the event, there were prominent figures such as the vice president of the Bureau of Parliament, Raquel Sans, and other influential members of the party. However, the absence of councilors from the Aragonese Government drew attention, highlighting a possible fracture in the party’s internal alliances.

The Call to Renewal

Marc Aloy, the mayor of Manresa, was the first to make an explicit call for leadership renewal. He stressed that only through a change of direction can we face the new political stage. Alba Camps added that the future of the party must be more inclusive and diverse, with leadership that serves the organization and not the other way around.

Reflections on the Future

Teresa Jordà introduced the concept of ‘quiet transition’, a term that evokes a smooth and controlled evolution within the party. This idea contrasts with the turbulent times that ERC has experienced, and which now need to be addressed with a new strategy and a collaborative approach.

A Challenge for Oriol Junqueras

Oriol Junqueras, current president of ERC, is preparing for a new challenge in his political career, with the intention of presenting his candidacy in an event scheduled for September 21. This New National Left movement represents a clear opposition to his vision, with a firm commitment to introduce radical changes in the way the party is led.

The Way Forward

With the deadline for registering candidacies set for October 7, the future of ERC is uncertain, but full of opportunities. New Esquerra Nacional seeks not only to challenge the current establishment, but also to establish a new paradigm in Catalan politics, one that can unite different voices under the same banner of change and renewal.
