Nieves Lady Barreto and security in Los Llanos de Aridane
The Minister of the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, Nieves Lady Barreto, has recently announced important security measures in Los Llanos de Aridane, related to the presence of the Canarian Police in the area. In a meeting with merchants and mayors of the Aridane Valley, the collaboration of the Autonomous Police patrols with the local police and the Civil Guard to reinforce security in the municipalities of Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and Tazacorte was highlighted.
Expansion of police action
After listening to the assessments of the mayors of the Valley, Nieves Lady Barreto announced the expansion of the radius of action of the patrols, including the peripheral areas of the municipalities and the Port of Tazacorte, as a route for drugs to enter the island. In addition, it was reported on the incorporation of a dog specialized in the detection of narcotics to the Autonomous Police force on the island, belonging to the newly created Group of Canine Guides of the autonomous body.
Results and perspectives
The general director of Security of the Government of the Canary Islands, David del Pino, explained that the majority of the interventions of the Regional Police since their arrival on the island are related to robbery and drug trafficking or possession. Although the greater police presence on the street was positively valued, the representatives of the Valley merchants expressed the need for a greater presence of troops, a commitment that Nieves Lady Barreto was in charge of conveying to the corresponding authorities.
Deployment of the Regional Police
The announcement by the Ministry of the Presidency regarding the deployment of the Regional Police in the non-capital islands throughout 2024 was reiterated, starting with La Gomera and Lanzarote, and later in La Palma. In addition, it was reported on the search for locations for the future island police station of the General Corps of the Canarian Police in Los Llanos de Aridane, with the support of the Cabildo and its president.
Growth of police forces
Nieves Lady Barreto highlighted the growth of the Canarian Police, with the incorporation of new agents and the next call for positions, which will translate into a significant increase in personnel by the end of 2024.
