The president of Esquerra Republicana seeks the endorsement of the militancy
Oriol Junqueras, still president of Esquerra Republicana, has announced today his intention to seek the support of the militancy to continue leading the party in the next congress to be held on November 30. Junqueras has made it clear that at no time has he felt pressured to resign from his position in the leadership of the party, but rather he has made the decision to temporarily step aside to address citizens as equals, without the burden of a specific position.
Dialogue and reconnection with society
Junqueras’ objective is to discuss society’s expectations towards Esquerra Republicana after the adverse electoral results and resolve the lack of harmony that has been evident in the last elections. In his words, it is necessary to listen and reconstruct what society expects from the party and what they can offer. Junqueras feels capable of participating in this process of reconnection and learning, and to do so he intends to visit every corner of Catalonia in search of the endorsement of republican militants.
Commitment despite limitations
Despite being disqualified by the Spanish justice system, Junqueras is willing to help from all sides and believes that he will only feel fully legitimized if he has the support of the militancy. His intention is to go out into the streets and talk to as many people as possible to strengthen the party and contribute to the well-being of Catalan society.
Surprise announcement after an internal meeting
Junqueras’ announcement to temporarily step aside from the party leadership surprised everyone after an internal meeting of more than four hours. Although he had initially rejected the idea of resigning due to poor election results, he eventually agreed to temporarily leave office. Unlike other members of the party, Junqueras plans to run for re-election at the next Esquerra Republicana congress.
