A firm stance on the need for deterrence
The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, announced today Spain’s readiness to recognize the Palestinian state and expressed support for the two-state solution. In his appearance in Congress, Sánchez reiterated the importance of strengthening the deterrence capacity, especially against Russia, to protect the values of peace, democracy and freedom that represent Europe, rejecting at the same time the bellicose rhetoric and the speculations about world wars
Opposing reactions and evaluation of the opposition
Sánchez’s words have generated opposing reactions, such as those of the Popular Party, which have rejected the decision. The opposition, led by Alberto Núñez-Feijóo, has expressed that this approach instills unnecessary fear and poses an unwanted military escalation. He has stated that this speech is confusing and counterproductive for citizens.
A vision of foreign policy
Sánchez has supported his position by stating that the aim is not to lead a conflict or transform Europe into a war economy, dismissing the need to substantially change production or alter the lives of citizens to deal with external threats.
Assessment of government actions
At the same time, the opposition has described these actions as mere maneuvers to divert attention from internal issues such as amnesty or corruption, accusing the government of desperation.
Outstanding economic growth
Sánchez has highlighted the reforms implemented that have positioned Spain as an influential actor in Europe and have contributed to reducing social inequalities and stabilizing public finances, noting the record of 21 million people affiliated with Social Security during his mandate.
