Investigation into mistreatment of migrants in Italy
Italian authorities are investigating an incident in which a truck driver forced a group of migrant women out of the vehicle using violence. The incident took place near the border in Ventimiglia, and has been widely shared on social media, sparking outrage among users.
The women, of Eritrean nationality, had been welcomed by the Caritas organization in Ventimiglia the night before. After the incident, they recounted what happened, which has generated consternation in the person responsible for Cáritas’ immigration area in the area, Serena Regazzoni, who has denounced the lack of a reception camp as an insurmountable problem.
Political reactions
The Italian political opposition has raised its voice in response to this event. Laura Boldrini, deputy of the Democratic Party (PD) and president of the Permanent Committee of the House of Human Rights, has condemned the cruelty and dehumanization towards migrants. Likewise, the senator from the Italia Viva party, Raffaella Paita, has highlighted the vulnerable situation of migrant women who try to cross the border into France.
Exploitation of migrants in Italy
This incident joins other recent cases of migrant exploitation in Italy. Rome’s financial police have arrested people belonging to a criminal network that supplied opium to migrants to prevent them from becoming fatigued while working in the fields of Agro Pontino, in the Lazio region. In addition, an operation has been carried out against two men accused of enslaving Indian laborers who worked in the fields.
