Nico Williams, the new jewel of the transfer market

Nico Williams has become one of the most desired stars on the transfer market. After an impressive season with Athletic and an outstanding performance in the Euro Cup, especially shining in the final between Spain and England and being named MVP, several European clubs have set their eyes on him. Among them, Barcelona has shown special interest in the Spanish international, making multiple inquiries about the possible hiring of him in recent months.

A signing that involves sacrifices

The enthusiasm for Williams’ possible arrival at Barcelona has raised great expectations among fans. However, his incorporation would have a direct impact on the team’s current roster. One of the necessary moves to make room for Williams would be the sale of one of Barça’s current players for a figure close to 50 million euros.

Raphinha’s departure, a viable option

Raphinha, who joined Barcelona two seasons ago, could be the player sacrificed to complete the signing of Nico Williams. Although his performance has not been unsatisfactory, he has not managed to meet the high expectations placed on him, especially considering that his signing cost 58 million euros plus 9 million in variables. Given the growing interest in Williams, the club does not rule out a sale of Raphinha if a suitable offer arrives.

Interest from the Premier League

The newspaper Sport has indicated that Barcelona could accept an offer close to 50 million euros for Raphinha. Among those interested in the Brazilian player are several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United. In addition, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United could join the bid for the forward.

Possible return to England

Raphinha, who is under contract with Barcelona until 2027 with a €1bn release clause, has instructed his agent to explore offers if he is not guaranteed a leading role in the team. Not even his former agent Deco, now Barcelona’s sporting director, or manager Hansi Flick can guarantee him the role he seeks, especially with the potential arrival of Nico Williams. The Brazilian already has Premier League experience, having played for Leeds in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons, and would not be averse to returning to England if his playing time at Barcelona is limited.

If his departure finally takes place, Raphinha would leave Barcelona after two seasons in which he has played 87 games, scored 20 goals, distributed 25 assists and won two titles under the direction of Xavi Hernández. His possible departure would open space for the Barça club to incorporate Nico Williams, a signing that promises to excite fans.
