Project ‘L’Esperit’: Urban Art to Support Mental Health

The Views of the Streets of Valencia

From August 2023, green explodes on the walls of Valencia, fusing with black to create a profound urban expression. More than half a thousand shadowy figures captivate passers-by, appearing both in the oldest corners of the neighborhood and in the most modern and lively streets.

It is a graffiti in the form of a ghostly silhouette that arouses the curiosity of both pedestrians and online users, who venture to discover its origin and meaning.

The Symbology of the Shadow

According to the promoters of this movement, the idea arose the previous summer from an urban artist motivated by active participation in society. The shadow represents the citizenry as a whole, with a design that aims to be inclusive and understandable for everyone, even the youngest.

The green color of the eyes symbolizes the toxicity of a look that does not react to social inequalities, while the black highlights the dark side present in everyone. The absence of mouth and hands represents the inability to act before what is witnessed.

The Altruistic Mission

The ‘L’Esperit’ project not only seeks to innovate and integrate into everyday life, but also aims to raise funds for mental health.

Income comes from altruistic donations from people who want to support. In return, some receive merchandise to spread the art on the streets. Selling caps with the same graffiti design is an example of this.

Concrete Actions

The funds raised will be invested in art therapy workshops for students with serious mental disorders, such as those at the Therapeutic Educational Unit of Valencia. In addition, the possibility of forming an association is contemplated for a more transparent management.

Spanish legislation allows donations to be received without the need to establish a specific company or association, although there are regulations that regulate this procedure.

Citizen Collaboration

Anonymity is key to the work’s identity. The social acceptance of the project is remarkable, although there are diverse opinions about the initiative. Special attention is given to constructive feedback and interaction with the community is encouraged.

A collaborative online map allows graffiti to be located around the city, giving people the ability to add new spots.

Urban Art and Social Impact

The ‘L’Esperit’ project uses urban art as a vehicle for social awareness. In addition to its physical implications in the urban space, it is also committed to a digital diffusion that expands its impact.

Street art can serve as a means of social complaint when it is based on a clear and powerful message. In this case, the project seeks a deep and reflective understanding of today’s society.
