Proposal for the permanence of the Kanpai Plan in Barcelona

by PREMIUM.CAT

An evolutionary security strategy

The Presidency and Security Commission has made a significant decision this April, with the intention of turning the Kanpai Plan into a permanent initiative to combat crime in sensitive areas of Barcelona. The proposal, promoted by the Junts group, has gained wide support from several parties, including the PSC, ERC, PP and Vox, while BComú has opted for abstention.

An unprecedented security device

Since its implementation in early April, the Kanpai Plan has mobilized an exceptional device that includes about a thousand agents of various security forces, including the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Barcelona City Police, as well as collaborations with the National Police and the local forces of Hospitalet and Badalona. This deployment seeks to identify and capture those who repeat in criminal acts.

Calls to diverging action and opinions

During the meeting, Jordi Martí Galbis, a representative of Junts, urged the Collboni government to prioritize this initiative, emphasizing that its effectiveness cannot be limited to a single annual event. According to him, the need to maintain this plan is crucial in areas with greater conflict.

Unexpected comparisons

The Deputy Mayor for Security, Albert Batlle, responded to Martí Galbis with an allusion to the iconic characters of Tintin, Dupond and Dupont, noting that his proposal for more police presence is shared by the Government, indicating that the goal is a collaboration aligned in the fight against crime.

Opinions on the effectiveness of the plan

Jordi Coronas de ERC added that it is essential to stabilize the Kanpai Plan and, if necessary, expand its geographical application. In contrast, Juan Milián del PP has warned that the solution is not in marketing, but in an increase in police presence on the street. Gonzalo de Oro de Vox has celebrated the visible improvements since the entrance of his party to the City Council, highlighting the positive changes in security.

Divergences in the approach

The only one to distance himself from the proposal was Marc Serra de BComú, who has expressed concern that the establishment of permanent devices could diminish the deterrent effect that is expected of this type of operation. This reflection opens a debate on the balance between security and public perception of it.

Looking to the future

With the proposal to make the Kanpai Plan a permanent measure, Barcelona is in a key moment in defining its security policy. The collaboration between the different security forces and the political will of the various parties will be essential to meet the challenges of crime and guarantee the safety of citizens.
