Protecting Blue Gaig: New initiatives for conservation

by PREMIUM.CAT

The migration of blue gaig and his return to Osona

As the end of April approaches, the Blue Gaig Migration show (Coracias Garrulus) is present in Osona, a migratory bird that embarks on its journey from the Calid lands of Sub -Saharan Africa, covering countries such as Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabue. This species, with a vibrant blue plumage, stops in our region during its journey to northern Europe, a time expected by both ornithology fans and naturalists.

New Nest boxes: a cozy environment for blue gaig

On this occasion, seven nest boxes were added to the existing five, which settled last year in Sant Martí Sescorts. This action is part of a continuous effort to facilitate the reproduction of this bird. Thanks to the collaboration between the Osona-Iichn Naturalists Group, Endesa and the City Council of Manlleu, new nests have been distributed in strategically located electrical supports.

Details of the installation

The new boxes have been designed to imitate the natural cavities that blue gaigs prefer to nest. Placed about four meters high, these structures seek to prevent the access of predators such as the Rider or the Mesquer cat. In addition, they have been oriented to the north to minimize the sun exposure during the hot summer days.

Positive results and futuristic expectations

Last year, five lice were obtained in one of the boxes, while in Gurb, near the Gurri river, four more were raised. The promoters of the project, like Carles Martorell, are optimistic about the future, waiting for the initiative to be just as successful as in other regions such as Alt Empordà or El Segrià.

The importance of blue gaig in the ecosystem

The presence of blue gaig is not only significant because of its beauty, it also serves as an indicator of the health of local ecosystems. Its existence directly depends on the availability of food and safe places for nesting, which emphasizes the importance of initiatives like this to maintain the biodiversity of the region.

A continuous commitment to conservation

The conservation project is not limited to Osona, as it is also planned to install four boxes in Santa Eulàlia de Puig-Oriol, another place with potential for the breeding of this protected species. Collaboration between various entities emphasizes the importance of joining efforts to preserve biodiversity and ensure a sustainable future for blue gaig and other threatened species.
