The Camanegre path: a species in danger
The Camanegre path (Charadrius Alexandrinus) is a wreckage considered vulnerable in Catalonia, where it is part of the catalog of wildlife. Its survival has been threatened, mainly by the predation of dogs and cats, as well as the tourist pressure that affects their nesting areas on the beaches.
Intensified Surveillance Actions
With the arrival of the nesting season, the Vendrell authorities have intensified surveillance on the beaches of Coma-ruga, Sant Salvador and the Francàs. Local police, along with Rural Agents, are in charge of controlling dog access, which is banned by law, with sanctions that can reach 700 euros.
Preventive measures and protection
The beach councilor, Marta Tobella, emphasized the importance of preserving the species, announcing the creation of a cohabitation beach with dogs. This initiative will allow the owners to enjoy their animals without jeopardizing the nests of Corriol Camanegre.
Nesting and nests protection
Currently, El Vendrell is one of the ten Catalan populations where this species nests. A new protection closure has recently been established on Coma-ruga beach, where several pairs of paths have been identified. This measure ensures that nesting is done without discomfort for beach users.
Surveillance and signage
From March to the end of summer, a surveillance device will be activated to detect and protect nests. Raül Pérez, head of the basic area of Rural Agents in the Baix Penedès, emphasized that the aim is to avoid inconvenience that could affect the incubation of eggs.
Reflections on conservation
Ricard Gutiérrez, from the Fauna and Flora Service of the Generalitat, said that only one of the posts has prospered in the last three years, emphasizing the fragility of the species. Mayor Kenneth Martínez emphasized that the presence of the path is an indicative of the environmental quality of the beaches, and urged the community to unite efforts for their conservation.
Future and community commitment
The City Council of Vendrell has been working on the renaturalization of the beaches for years, with the aim of creating a balance between the enjoyment of the citizens and the protection of the wildlife. The preservation of threatened species such as the Camanegre path is a commitment that requires the collaboration of the entire community.
