Puente: A Voice of Optimism in the Middle of the Political Storm
MADRID, April 15. The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, issued a reassuring speech today in response to the concerns raised by Junts+ candidate Carles Puigdemont. Puigdemont had threatened to withdraw his support for Pedro Sánchez’s government if the PSC stood in the way of a pro-independence government.
“I have many doubts that this will happen”, said Puente during an informative breakfast organized by Europa Press. These words come after questioning the viability of a better alternative to the current government. “I understand that some may be optimistic, but I honestly don’t see how it could materialize,” he added.
A Criticism of the Possible Interference of the PSC
Puente commented on Puigdemont’s statements regarding the agreement in the Parliament of Catalonia. In this agreement, the PSC, PP and BComú allowed Jaume Collboni (PSC) to be appointed mayor, after Xavier Trias (Junts) had won the elections. Puigdemont expressed his disapproval, stating that this would not be understandable in the Catalan Parliament.
Puigdemont warned that his support for the Sánchez government could be at stake if PSC candidate Salvador Illa follows in Collboni’s footsteps. He stated that it would not be reasonable to support a candidate who has not won the election.
Positive Vision of the Future
Despite the political tensions, Puente has shown confidence that the legislature will move forward after the next Catalan elections on May 12. In addition, he has expressed his conviction that the general budgets of the State for the year 2025 can be approved.
