Vladimir Putin strengthens ties in Harbin
Russian President Vladimir Putin has paid a visit to the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin, formerly known as ‘Little Moscow’ due to its historically significant Russian population and Russian Orthodox-style architecture. This visit occurs one day after his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting the close relationship between both countries and leaders, who committed to strengthening their military ties. In addition, the improvement of economic cooperation has been highlighted, with the opening of an office of the Russian sovereign wealth fund in Harbin and the holding of the China-Russia Expo, a trade fair.
Harbin, a city with Russian influence
Harbin, also known as the ‘Cold Tourism Capital’ or ‘Icy Disneyland’, has been described as the most Russian city in China. Located near the border with Russia, this city has maintained an architecture of Orthodox churches and European-style streets that attract millions of Chinese tourists. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Harbin was an important Russian settlement, attracting large numbers of Soviet emigrants due to the construction of the railway line in the region. This Russian influence, combined with its strategic, commercial, industrial and energy importance, has led the Russian president to dedicate a full day to his visit to this city.
Putin’s visit to China
During his second day in China, Putin participated in the Russia-China Expo, the binational forum for regional cooperation, and met with professors and students from the local university. In addition, he visited the Orthodox Church of the Intercession of the Virgin, one of the ten that remained standing after the Cultural Revolution. Despite more anecdotal activities, Putin took the opportunity to offer China affordable energy supplies and create a favorable environment for Chinese investments in Russia. He highlighted Russia’s ability to reliably supply the Chinese economy and companies with environmentally friendly energy, as well as offering economic advantages and support to Chinese companies wishing to invest in Russia.
Russian-Chinese relationship in the global arena
The meeting between Putin and Xi Jinping also aimed to flex muscle and send a clear message to the world, showing consensus on global issues such as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, multipolarity and trade. This demonstration of unity seeks to distance itself from Western positions, consolidating a ‘friendship’ that seems to be here to stay. The future of this relationship will be crucial in determining its scope and impact in the coming months.
