An innovative musical dioleg

The trumpeter Raynald Colom recently shared his vision on the ‘Ray of Light’ project, a proposal that seeks to merge elements of jazz, electronics and hip-hop. In an interview with the betevé, Columbus took the opportunity to praise the work of Joan Chamorro and Sant Andreu Jazz Band, who have won a deserving second place at the New York Essentiallly Ellington Festival, promoted by the renowned Wynton Marsalis trumpeter. “After two decades of dedication, this is a well -deserved recognition for John,” he stated.

The launch of Ray of Light

The new Columbus project will premiere in El Molino, with the collaboration of talents such as the Canary Pianist Kevin Díaz, the rapper Mabreezee, the DJ Swet, the bassist Simbiat Ebhon and the drummer José Benítez, considered one of the best in the Spanish hip-hop genre. ‘José is the indisputable reference of rhythm in this scene,’ the trumpeter added.

A creative journey

The idea of ’Ray of Light’ was born from an invitation from theater director Iván Morales, who asked Columbus to create topics for the soundtrack of his first film, ‘Breakfast with me’, presented at the Malaga Festival. Interestingly, Columbus’s band appears on a scene in the film, performing ‘Pay the Price’, one of the highlights of the project.

An evolving project

Currently, ‘Ray of Light’ is constantly developing, with only two songs recorded so far. Each launch will include a single cover created by photographers that Columbus admires, such as the Dominic Talvola of the United States and the French Toni Tixier, who is also a musician. “Ideas are born during concerts and then transform them into recordings,” Columbus commented.

A reflection on urban music

Columbus expressed his fascination with the scene of urban music in Barcelona, saying that he prefers to refer to his work as ‘American black music’ instead of limited to the jazz term. ‘Louis Armstrong and Beyoncé share the same musical inheritance. Jazz is a form of expression that adapts to new sounds, and the hip-hop of the 70’s is an essential part of this evolution, using jazz samples to create new sound experiences, “he said.

Futuristic collaborations

In addition to his work in ‘Ray of Light’, Columbus is preparing a new project called ‘Constellations’. This initiative will include a rope quartet and recognized musicians such as Joe Sanders and Greg Hutchinson, with whom he has previously collaborated. These new creations promise to expand their musical universe and explore new creative dimensions.
