An Ambitious Plan for the Tarragona Coast

The Tarragona Department of the Environment has revealed a coastal transformation plan that seeks to revitalize the city’s beaches and coastal spaces. This initiative, scheduled for 2025, aims to restore and improve the marine and terrestrial ecosystem along more than 45 square kilometers of coastline.

A Financial Commitment to Nature

The project is part of ‘Tarragona Greenbelt’26’, which seeks to renaturalize both urban and peri-urban environments. With an investment of 3,604,816.11 euros, this initiative is funded by the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition.

Concrete Actions for Renaturalization

During a visit to the Arrabassada beach, councilor Guillermo García de Castro explained that the plan includes several actions, such as expanding dune spaces, introducing native species and eliminating invasive species. These actions seek to increase the resilience of the beaches to the impact of climate change and storms.

Renaturalization of Miracle Beach

At the iconic Miracle Beach, measures will be implemented to remove exotic species and regenerate dunes with wooden enclosures. It is planned to plant native species such as Elymus farctus and Ammophila arenaria, which will encourage a natural succession of plants.

Improvements to the Mas Rosselló Park

Another highlight of the project is the integration of the Mas Rosselló Park into the coastal system. Actions will be carried out there such as the demolition of obsolete walls and the cleaning of waste, in addition to creating new flowerbeds with native vegetation.

Contributions to Local Biodiversity

The plan includes the installation of shelter boxes for bats and insectivorous birds, thus improving the park’s biodiversity. Informative panels will also be added on the native species and the actions carried out.

Performances between Platja dels Cossis and l’Arrabassada

Improvements in this sector include the restoration of native vegetation and the creation of dune regeneration areas, with the aim of restoring the natural habitat and promoting biodiversity.

Future Perspectives and Sustainable Commitment

The actions, which will be carried out throughout 2024, have a budget of 404,180.72 euros and are expected to last approximately four months. This plan not only seeks to restore the coastline, but also marks a step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly Tarragona.
