The social purpose of the educational system
In times of crisis of confidence in all institutions, the educational system is also in the process of rethinking the social purpose entrusted to it. What have we as a society asked of the education system in recent decades? **Linguistic standardization**, **cultural assimilation** and **social integration of immigrants**, **digital literacy of the new generations**, **environmental awareness**, **integration of new knowledge* *, **redefinition of the roles of teachers with respect to students and their families**, **adaptation to the new models of families and their specific needs**, **specialized attention to students who require specific support for various reasons**. There are sectors that have called reconversion of similar adaptations.
Economic reforms and cuts
Coinciding with times of economic cuts that have not helped, an incredible number of reforms that due to political short-termism have neither had time to be compared nor evaluated with enough serenity and the necessary distance. Sometimes the criticism has been felt much more than the recognition of a job well done. The good name of educational centers takes many, many years to build and can collapse in a few weeks.
The teaching staff’s relief
At present, there is a lack of professionals to take over for retiring teachers. The demographic outlook presents this fact as a trend that will grow a lot in the next five to fifteen years. The social perception of people who dedicate themselves to teaching, the disdain for professional dedications that are not assimilated to a high retributive level does not help.
The value of education
We remember those people who have taught us because of how they have treated us and because of their modeling function rather than because of the content they have made us learn.
