Celebrating a historical legacy

This Monday, the city of Reus is preparing to remember a decisive moment in its history: the 94th anniversary of the proclamation of the Catalan Republic by Francesc Macià. An event that not only marks a milestone in time, but also symbolizes the hopes of a collective project that aspired to a future of social justice, equality and cultural progress.

A spirit that lasts

More than nine decades later, commemoration is not only an exercise in nostalgia, but also a call for reflection and commitment to republican values. Today, these ideals of social justice and citizen participation are more relevant than ever, and the claim of the Republic is an act of courage and hope to face the challenges of the present.

The current challenges

In a European context marked by the rise of the far right and discourses that foster hatred, it is crucial not to accept the normalization of these ideas. Democracy is at a crossroads, and this is where republican values can offer a significant alternative. Defending a new order based on social justice and inclusion is a shared responsibility.

A call for mobilization

The response to these threats must be an increase in civic commitment and the active participation of the citizens. Only through coexistence and mutual respect can we build a society that really promotes freedom and equality for all.

The role of youth

In addition, it is essential that new generations feel heard. The Republic must be a tool that allows young people to get involved in political and social life, opening spaces for their participation. The commitment of young people to republican values is essential to ensure a fairer and more egalitarian future.

A vision for the future

From Reus, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya is committed to continuing to fight for a more democratic and cohesive city. Local politics represents the first line of defense of democracy, and it is from this basis that we can move towards an inclusive and equitable republic, designed for all and for everyone.

In this commemoration day, the reflection invites us to continue working with determination and hope, with a view to a better tomorrow.

Final reflections

Òscar Subirats, Councilor of the Republican Left in the City Council of Reus, recalls that local politics is an essential platform for defending the rights and freedoms of citizens, a reminder that the struggle for a fairer society is a continuous effort that requires the active participation of all.
