A year full of tribute to a pioneer
In 2025 he will mark a special moment for the city of Reus, who will dedicate a series of commemorative activities to Salvador Vilaseca, one of his most prominent children. To coincide with the fifty years of his death, the city seeks to emphasize its contribution as a doctor, historian and archeologist.
Official opening at the Salvador Vilaseca Museum
The program will begin on April 8 with a conference entitled “The legacy of Dr. Salvador Vilaseca, 50 years after his death” presented by the researcher Josep M. Vergès. This activity will take place at the Salvador Vilaseca Museum at 19:00, marking the beginning of a year of reflection and celebration around the figure of this illustrious Reus.
Activities for the whole family
On Tuesday, April 15, the museum will offer two sessions of the family workshop “When the necklaces speak”. This educational activity is designed for children and their families, who will be able to explore prehistory through ornaments and participate in the creation of their own piece.
An archeological route to remember his legacy
On May 24, the archeologist Jaume Massó will direct a popular hike entitled “Following in the footsteps of Dr. Vilaseca”. This route will lead participants to discover important archeological sites excavated by Vilaseca, including the Iberian settlement of Santa Anna de Castellvell and the Roman oven of La Buada.
A tribute that endures in time
Daniel Recasens, Councilor for Culture and Language Policy, emphasized the intention to continue this program throughout the year, with new activities that will be communicated when they are confirmed. This initiative seeks not only to remember the figure of Vilaseca, but also to promote his work among the new generations.
Preserving his inheritance
To complement the activities, a commemorative book point has been created to be distributed in the municipal libraries, with an image of Salvador Vilaseca captured by the 1930’s by photographer Eduard Borràs. In addition, the Reus Museum works on the digitalization of Doctor’s documentary collection, which includes correspondence, excavation and manuscript memories, thus facilitating access to researchers and the general public.
Life and work of Salvador Vilaseca
Salvador Vilaseca Anguera, born in 1896, was a doctor who left an indelible imprint in his city. His passion for history and archeology led him to accumulate a valuable collection of archeological and ethnographic objects, promoting the creation of the first Municipal Museum of Reus in 1934. He was an active member of several scientific academies and institutions, and was recognized with honors such as the Municipal Merit Medal and the distinction of illustrious son. Vilaseca died on April 13, 1975, leaving a legacy of more than 270 publications and a prehistoric collection of great importance that is now part of the Museum of Archeology that bears his name.
