A step forward in water management in Catalonia

The municipal company Aigües de Reus has started an ambitious project that promises to transform the management of rainwater in Catalonia. This initiative, known as the Comprehensive Sanitation System Management Plan, is based on a recent legal modification approved by the Spanish government, which seeks to establish a new framework for the treatment of water.

Clear goals for a sustainable future

The main objective of the plan is to improve the performance of the sanitation system, with a focus on three key areas. First, there will be a thorough analysis of the volume of wastewater that the system can manage, as well as its pollution based on the weather conditions. Second, it seeks to protect stormwater during storms to prevent environmental pollution. Finally, the project aims to gradually eliminate the discharges not treated in the sanitation networks.

Regulations and responsibilities

The newly implemented regulations establish that the municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, such as Reus, must complete this plan before September 2026. Daniel Rubio, Councilor of Aigües de Reus, emphasized the importance of this project, which for the first time specifically addresses the management of health and stormwater water.

Collaboration with sector experts

Given the technical character and the complexity of the plan, Aigües de Reus has decided to entrust its writing to a recognized engineering company, Técnica y Proyectos S.A., with a contract valued at about 500,000 euros. This approach guarantees that the plan is made with the highest quality and within the established deadlines.

A paradigm shift in regulation

Royal Decree 665/2023, which serves as the basis for the creation of this plan, represents a significant advance in the regulation of discharges into the environment. The new guidelines will provide a framework that will guide the future actions of sanitation systems in large cities.

History of Water Management in Reus

Aigües de Reus has been working on various sanitation plans for years, which have served to regulate and improve water management in the city. The current Master Plan, in force since 2015, will now be complemented by this new initiative, which promises a more integrated and modern approach.

Looking to the future

With this plan, Reus not only positions itself as a pioneer in the management of rainwater in Catalonia, but also prepares to meet the environmental challenges of the future, guaranteeing an efficient and sustainable sanitation system for the coming generations.
