A new natural refuge for fauna and flora
Next year, the city of Reus will launch an innovative biosphere reserve that will include three pools of water and a fourth of a temporary nature. The main objective of this project is to provide a suitable habitat for various species of animals, such as birds and amphibians, while promoting the conservation of aquatic plants such as rushes and water lilies.
Lookouts and observation points for citizens
The new space, which will cover 12,000 square meters, will include a nine-meter-high viewpoint, designed on three levels, to facilitate the observation of local fauna. Located at the sewage treatment plant near Aigüesverds Golf, this viewpoint will become a point of attraction for those looking to enjoy nature in an accessible environment.
Significant investment for sustainability
With an expected investment of one million euros, the project is a decisive step towards the regeneration of the city. The birds will be able to build their nests with the materials available in the area, while a windmill and solar panels will contribute to the energy of the site.
Citizen participation, key in the process
The design of the reserve has recently been presented to the residents of Aigüesverds, with the aim of incorporating their opinions before finalizing the final project at the end of the year. This initiative is part of the RENATUREus plan, which seeks to improve the environmental resilience of the city with the support of the Fundación Biodiversidad and European Next Generation funds.
A diversified ecosystem
The new environment will include a slow-flowing watercourse, two permanent ponds and a temporary pond, designed to create rich biodiversity. The irregular shapes and varied margins will support a wide range of habitats for local flora and fauna.
Maintenance and environmental education
The management of this natural space will require periodic maintenance and gardening actions, as well as the monitoring of biodiversity. In addition, educational and pedagogical uses are planned, with areas of restricted access to preserve the integrity of the habitats.
A space to discover nature
Visitors will be able to enjoy different observation points and a viewpoint that will allow a panoramic view of the complex. In addition, free access routes and informative signage will be included to promote knowledge about the biodiversity of the area.
A project with a future perspective
With an implementation schedule planned between July 2023 and December 2025, the total budget amounts to 4.2 million euros, of which 95% will be financed through European funds. This project not only seeks to conserve the environment, but also to create a space for coexistence between nature and citizens.
