Revitalizing Collserola: Actions and delay in the cleaning of natural spaces

A commitment to the environment

Almost a year ago, Barcelona City Council took a significant step to preserve the nature of Collserola, particularly in the area that borders on Nou Barris. This initiative was born in response to citizen concern about the proliferation of illegal landfills that had grown over the years.

Identification and cleaning of problem areas

After launching an active neighborhood campaign, the district located a total of 17 critical points where the neglect had wreaked. To date, four of these spaces that are publicly owned have been cleaned, as well as two areas that have been treated by the Collserola Park Consortium. However, the job is not over yet.

The challenges of cleaning

Of the 11 areas that remain to be cleaned, seven are privately owned. The City Council has begun an inspection process to identify the owners and issue cleaning orders. This task is complicated in some cases, as it is difficult to determine who is responsible, especially with two land inside the Collserola Park.

A First Step: The Cleaning of the Rockets

In May 2024, one of the most significant actions was carried out, focusing on the largest illegal landfill in the area, located in Llobera Street, near the Les Roquetes district. This performance was part of the ‘Collserola without landfills’ campaign, which has gathered more than 25 local entities to deal with this problem.

The active role of neighborhood entities

The ‘Collserola without landfills’ initiative was founded in early 2024 with the aim of restoring and dignifying the spaces that connect the neighborhoods with the mountain range. In these places, a large amount of waste has accumulated, including debris, panots, wood and ceramics, some of which date from the 60’s. Participating entities meet on a regular basis to monitor the evolution of cleaning and pressure for a sustainable solution.

A promising future for Collserola

With the continuity of these initiatives, we seek not only to clean the spaces, but also to foster greater respect for nature and the community. The collaboration between the City Council and neighborhood organizations is key to ensuring that Collserola remains a vital green lung for Barcelona.
