The PSC wins the Catalan elections
The Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC) has obtained a victory in the Catalan elections with 870,224 votes (27.94%) and 42 seats, according to 99.19% of the scrutiny. This is an increase of 9 seats from the 2021 election, and is the first time that the PSC has won both the largest number of seats and the most votes.
The pro-independence forces do not have a majority
Despite the victory of the PSC, the pro-independence forces do not manage to gain a majority in Parliament. In these elections, the pro-independence forces have presented themselves more divided than in the previous elections, and have not repeated the sanitary cordon against the PSC. This opens the door to possible pacts and alliances for government formation.
The road to the government of Salvador Illa
Salvador Illa, leader of the PSC, has focused his campaign on the idea of uniting and serving Catalans. Despite the victory of his party, Illa will need to find support to form a government. One option would be to agree with Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) and the Commons, or with Junts+. However, Illa has made it clear that it will not agree with Junts+ if it prioritizes independence.
The political future of Catalonia
The result of these elections marks a change in the balance of political forces in Catalonia. With the victory of the PSC and the division of the pro-independence forces, an uncertain scenario opens up for the political future of the region. The coming months will be decisive for the formation of the government and for the definition of the policies that will mark the path of Catalonia.
