Temporary stop and alternatives for users

The Vallvidrera Funicular, part of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) network, will be inactive from 5 to 23 August to carry out its annual inspection. During this period, an alternative service will be established that will offer shuttle buses to cover the three stations along the funicular route: Peu del Funicular, Carretera de les Aigües and Vallvidrera Superior.

Important Details of Substitute Service

The buses will be located close to the stations, thus facilitating access for users. However, at the Carretera de les Aigües station, passengers will be required to request the service through the intercom available.

Annual Review: A Crucial Process

During this time, FGC will carry out a series of essential maintenance works. These include the inspection of the mechanical and management components in the machine room, as well as a thorough analysis of the funicular’s layout and vehicles.

Improvements and Modernization

In addition to the standard overhaul, this year special attention will be paid to the brakes in the engine room. The rail brake and wheels of carriage 2 will be replaced as part of a scheduled replacement cycle. However, the modernisation also extends to the platform doors, which will be improved to increase their reliability and reduce the response time in the event of any failure.

Impact on Passengers

These improvements are part of FGC’s commitment to offering a safe and pleasant service. Currently, approximately 4,000 people depend on this funicular daily, which highlights the importance of ensuring high and continuous availability.

A Legacy of More than a Century

Opened in October 1906 by the Ferrocarril Sarrià Barcelona (FSB), the Vallvidrera Funicular has played a crucial role in connecting the Vallès with the town of Vallvidrera. In 1979, it became part of the FGC network and has undergone numerous significant reforms throughout its history, including a comprehensive modernisation in 1998, where it was transformed into a fully automatic system.

Key Facts about the Funicular

With a length of 736.6 metres and a gradient of 158 metres, the funicular has a maximum incline of 29%. Operated by two vehicles with capacity for 50 passengers each, its journey takes less than three minutes, making it an essential means of transport for those living in the area and visitors looking to enjoy the Collserola Natural Park.

As maintenance work progresses, the historic funicular route will continue to be a symbol of efficient transportation, fusing tradition with innovation to contribute to the well-being of the community.
