by PREMIUM.CAT

The Current Situation

The lack of water in Alt Empordà is an urgent issue that requires effective solutions. Several localities in this region are in emergency phase 2 of the Special Drought Plan and have only guaranteed supply for a few months. The Government is considering several options to address this critical situation.

Possible Solutions

The Government is exploring various alternatives to solve the lack of water in Alt Empordà. One of the options being considered is the possible construction of a large desalination plant in the region. In addition, the expansion of the Darnius-Boadella marsh is being debated as another possible solution.

Mobile desalination plants

In an attempt to immediately address the situation, the Government has already installed 12 mobile desalination plants in Roses and Empuriabrava. This measure is an interim step to provide water to the affected areas, but it is recognized that a more structural long-term solution is needed.

Other Possible Actions

In addition to the mobile desalination plants, the possibility of installing a permanent desalination plant similar to the one at the mouth of the Tordera river is being considered. The expansion of the Darnius-Boadella reservoir is also being studied as an option to increase the water supply capacity in the region.

Challenges and Considerations

The Muga River basin presents unique challenges as it is a small basin and periods of scarcity are recurrent. This situation directly affects farmers in the region, with only two years out of the last seven in which they have been able to irrigate their land. This highlights the urgency of finding sustainable and lasting solutions for the lack of water in the Alt Empordà.
