A conflict with multiple dimensions
The issue of the renewal of the image rights of the castelleras has once again come into focus, revealing once again the disparities of opinion between the parties involved. The Coordinator of Colles Castelleres de Catalunya (CCCC), together with the most prominent colles and La Xarxa, are facing a dilemma that threatens the continuity of castelleras broadcasts for 2025.
The contract that sets the course for 2025
After the expiration of the image rights transfer contract with La Xarxa in 2024, the need for a new agreement becomes urgent. The local television network depends on this agreement to continue broadcasting the casteller events, a task that last year managed to produce more than thirty days.
Challenges in negotiation
The complexity of this transfer lies not only in its extent, but also in who should make the decisions and the associated compensation. These issues were already a source of disagreement between 2017 and 2019, when some gangs refused to transfer image rights to the CCCC.
The new transfer draft
Last year, the CCCC Board prepared a first draft for the transfer of rights, which was presented to the clubs at the end of November. The proposal maintains the essence of the previous contract, but incorporates new conditions on the management of broadcasting rights.
Significant changes
One of the main new features is that, instead of allowing the colles to manage the rights of the dyads not included in the La Xarxa list, it will now be the CCCC that will negotiate the conditions with other operators. This marks a substantial change in the colles’ decision-making power.
The sponsorship contract: another front for debate
Another element that generates controversy is the sponsorship contract between the Castellers de Vilafranca and La Xarxa, which has increased in importance and quantity over the years. This agreement has been criticized by other groups who consider that it creates a comparative grievance.
Reaction of the gangs
Recently, a group of nine colles that made 9-person castells sent a letter to the CCCC expressing their opposition to the renewal of the sponsorship contract between the Vilafranquins and the Colla Vella, arguing that the economic benefits derived from this agreement are disproportionate and not very transparent.
The role of The Network
The Network has expressed its willingness to continue to support the casteller world, but on the condition that the transfer of rights is unified. This represents a considerable challenge, as the groups are in a situation of disagreement that could complicate future negotiations.
The vision of the Castellers of Vilafranca
The Castellers de Vilafranca, who have led the initiative on image rights, feel attacked by criticism from other groups. Their position is based on the defense of their autonomy and their experience in managing these rights.
Looking to the future
With the new season on the horizon, the need to reach an agreement on the transfer of image rights is more urgent than ever. Tensions between the groups could affect the quality of broadcasts and the unity of the casteller world, a community that has shown its strength and resilience in times of crisis.
A challenge for cohesion
The path towards an agreement that satisfies all parties is tortuous, but mutual trust and collaboration will be key to guaranteeing the future of casteller broadcasts and their dissemination at a local and international level.
