A comedy that evokes classics
Imagining a title worthy of a Massagran story, the new show ‘A Father-in-Law for Rent’ presents one of the funniest episodes of Joan Pera’s career. This work, created by Susanna Garachana and Jaume Viñas, is being shown at the Teatre Goya until the end of January. Pera, one of the most emblematic actors in Catalonia, has entertained several generations with his unmistakable comic ability.
Argument: A plan that is complicated
The plot revolves around a young man in love who decides to hire an actor to play the role of father to his future mother-in-law, with the aim of making a good impression. However, events take a turn for the worse when the original actor is unable to attend the meeting, and in his place, a dubbing actor, played by Pera, takes over. This situation triggers a series of misunderstandings that keep the audience on edge.
A dynamic cast
Edu Lloveras, who plays the young protagonist, brings a refreshing energy to the stage, necessary to balance Pera’s humor. His ability to handle the veteran actor’s improvisations is admirable, creating a contrast between his imposing physique and insecure personality.
The role of women on stage
Clàudia Benito’s character, despite being the most discreet, is essential in clarifying the plot and guiding viewers through the narrative tangles. Her performance, full of sympathy, complements the comic energy of her male colleagues.
A lady with character
Munsta Alcañiz, in her role as the mother-in-law, brings an imposing presence and an evolution that surprises the audience, going from an image of coldness to a total involvement in the comedy game. Her appearance, in a spectacular costume, is one of the most memorable moments of the play.
A gripping script
Despite the simplicity of its premise, ‘A Father-in-Law for Rent’ stands out for its skill in dosing the revelations, keeping the audience’s attention at all times. Garachana and Viñas have created a text that, although predictable at times, manages to surprise with unexpected twists.
A scenario that accompanies
The set, designed by Enric Planas, is functional but could have been more imaginative. The floor where the events take place, with a fake Mondrian, serves as a backdrop, but some decorations could have added more visual richness to the show.
A return to pure comedy
With ‘A Father-in-Law for Rent’, Joan Pera shows that he still has a lot to offer the world of Catalan theatre. The play is a reminder of what comedy means: a good entanglement, charismatic characters and a humour that provokes laughter at every moment. This production is a true gift for theatre lovers and an opportunity to enjoy the best version of one of the most beloved comedians in the country.
