A notable growth in the use of antidepressants

In recent years, Catalonia has experienced a significant increase in the prescription of antidepressants, with more than 1.2 million insured individuals receiving at least one dispensing of these medications during 2023. This figure represents a surprising increase of 169% compared to 2020, according to data provided by the Department of Health.

The impact on the young population

One of the most concerning trends is the 253% increase in the prescription of antidepressants among those under the age of 15. This raises serious questions about the mental health of adolescents and the need for a more intensive approach to their care.

Alarming data about depressive disorders

Primary care statistics are also worrying, with 44,447 registered cases of depressive disorders during 2023. In addition, 23.8% of the population treated in adult mental health centers has been diagnosed with these disorders, with an average of 7.2 visits per patient. The majority of these cases were women, with 71% of the total.

Children’s mental health: a growing concern

Child and youth mental health centers have treated 9.5% of their population for depressive disorders, with a notable gender imbalance: 12.3% of girls compared to 5% of boys. The average annual visits per patient have been 12.2, with a total of 2,203 cases, 10% more than in 2020.

The reality of moderate and severe depression

According to the Catalan Health Survey, 9.2% of the population over 15 years old shows signs of moderate or severe depression, an increase of 28% compared to 2019. Women are the most affected, with 12%, in contrast to 6% of men. This problem is especially noticeable among people over 74 years old and those belonging to disadvantaged social classes.

An institutional response to the crisis

Coinciding with World Depression Day, the Department of Health has issued a statement highlighting the increase in the prevalence of depressive disorders, underlining the importance of continuing to invest in detection, prevention and social awareness. The 2021-2025 Health Plan seeks to reduce dependence on antidepressants, with 10.5% of patients still taking them for more than six months.

Recommendations to improve mental health

To combat the risk of depression, Health recommends adopting healthy habits, such as following a balanced diet, practicing regular physical exercise, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and prioritizing a good night’s rest. These measures are essential to promote better mental health in society.
