Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti calls for solidarity for the Holy Land

The prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, recalls the painful situation and the needs of Christians in the Holy Land and in other countries of the Near East. He appeals to be generous and understanding in the collection for the Holy Land that takes place, as every year, on Good Friday. This year, under the motto “Holy Land continues to suffer”.

Cardinal Gugerotti emphasizes that in the Holy Land many Christians leave the places where their religious roots are deeply rooted, leaving everything behind to escape the lack of hope. In addition, he underlines the call for help from Christians in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and other countries, and expresses his concern that these Christians can maintain their roots and not get lost in an unknown world.

Support for the Holy Land and its importance

The cardinal urges solidarity and expresses his gratitude to the local Churches, the Franciscans, the charity volunteers and all those who contribute to the Holy Land. It emphasizes the importance of keeping alive the soul of the East and its rich religious and cultural heritage.

The Custody of the Holy Land and its work

The Custody of the Holy Land, founded by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1217 and entrusted to the Franciscans in 1342, carries out a crucial task in Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus and Rhodes. With the participation of Franciscans from 41 nations and more than 150 religious, the custody maintains 55 sanctuaries, directs educational activity in 15 schools and supports social activity with more than 630 homes for families in need, 5 hospitals and more than 500 accommodation places for pilgrims.

Promotion of cultural, scientific and ecumenical action

In addition to its social tasks, the Custody of the Holy Land promotes cultural, scientific and ecumenical action through various institutions and publications, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of the rich religious and cultural heritage of this region.
