The Catalan Tenants’ Union calls for new measures to deal with the price of rents

The union is looking for an innovative index to regulate rental prices

The Catalan Tenants’ Union has claimed the application of an effective index to limit the price of rents and has urged the Government to promote a sanctioning regime. Marta Ill, spokeswoman for the organization, has emphasized the importance of immediately implementing the existing law and promoting a punitive approach to address violations.

This call comes after the Catalan executive has requested the Spanish government that the rent cap include the Catalan index. In addition, the introduction of alternative indicators has been considered which, from the point of view of the union, would be more effective and fair.

An internationally coordinated approach

The Housing Justice Encuentro congress has served as a framework to establish a network of international solidarity between tenants from various parts of the world against the abuses of investment funds on a global scale. In this sense, it has been agreed to create an international organization to fight for housing rights and counteract the impacts of real estate investment funds.

Marta Ill has stressed the importance of creating lasting organizations that defend people affected by inequalities in the real estate sector, while opting for effective and sustainable coordination.

Collaboration with academic entities

The Tenants’ Union has organized this congress in collaboration with the Property and Democratic Citizenship research project of the Universiteit Gent (Belgium) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. This has provided space for reflection on the need for legal frameworks and democratic instruments to protect tenants’ rights and counter the growing influence of real estate investment funds.

Encourage collective bargaining and joint actions

Marta Ill has advocated for the implementation of collective bargaining frameworks in the field of housing and has highlighted the importance of sustained rent strikes as a strategy to achieve more favorable conditions for tenants. This aligns with the intention to counter abusive practices and ensure equitable access to housing.

The participation of more than 200 militants and academics in this congress is estimated, coming from various national and international academic organizations and entities committed to the defense of tenants’ rights.
