Positive response to the complaint formalized by entities and associations

The Barcelona union of greuges has given a positive response to the complaint formalized by ten entities and associations against the exhibition of Formula 1 cars in the center of Barcelona. According to the administration, this initiative should be carried out in a space suitable for this type of activity, such as the Montmeló circuit, instead of in the city center. The Ombudsman concludes that this activity is not consistent with sustainable mobility policies or respect for public space, a healthy environment and health.

Position of the entities and arguments presented

Neighborhood entities, including the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Barcelona (FAVB), Eixample Respira and Revolta Escolar, among others, consider that the display of single-seaters in the city center is absurd and deplorable. They argue that the city should not be a space for motor competitions with smoke, noise and speed, since this generates environmental and noise pollution, negatively affecting the health of citizens. In addition, they express their concern about the promotion of reckless driving, which goes against road safety and speed moderation policies to reduce accidents and their severity.

Position of the syndicate and request to the Barcelona City Council

The Ombudsman shares many of the arguments of the entities and considers that it is difficult to justify authorising polluting activities in a context of climate crisis and global consensus towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It has asked the Barcelona City Council to assess the benefits of hosting this activity and the impact on citizens’ rights, considering the possibility of cancelling it. In addition, it has pointed out that the council has not provided them with the municipal authorisation to carry out this activity or the information requested in this regard.

Tour of Passeig de Gràcia and preparations for the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix

Barcelona has dedicated itself to the celebration of the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix, with a semi-urban layout of 5,474 meters. A great display has been prepared with several activities themed in Formula 1, including a Road Show through the streets of Paseo de Gracia. This event is scheduled for the afternoon of June 19, coinciding with a Fan Village available in Plaza Catalunya from June 15 and with the so-called Fan Forums. The single-seater route will start from the Universitat round, where the pits will be located, and will go up the promenade until reaching an iconic place in the city such as Casa Batlló.
