The hotel sector: axis of the action of the Council of Mallorca
The spokesman for MÉS for Mallorca at the Mallorca Council, Jaume Alzamora, has expressed his concern about the weight that the hotel sector has in the decisions of the island’s government. Alzamora has criticized that the Council’s actions are totally subordinated to the interests of the tourism industry.
Concern about road congestion
Alzamora has expressed his perplexity after the recent meeting between the Minister of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, Fernando Rubio, and the Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca to address the problem of road congestion. Alzamora’s skepticism comes from the fact that he considers these types of encounters to be the result of a predatory model that prioritizes the interests of tourists and not the island’s residents.
Use of public spaces for tourists
The spokesman for MÉS for Mallorca has recalled that hoteliers on the island have recently proposed the use of the University of the Balearic Islands campus car park to park tourists’ vehicles there during the summer months. Alzamora criticized this proposal and stated that Mallorca cannot allocate existing infrastructure or build new ones exclusively to meet the needs of hotels and tourists.
The lack of consideration towards the residents
Alzamora has regretted that the Mallorca Council does not take into account the needs of residents in its decisions related to the road network and public transport. According to the spokesman, the measures and infrastructure proposed by the PP are focused exclusively on tourists and do not take into account the well-being of the island’s residents. Alzamora has defended the right of Mallorcans to live without a car and to have quality public transport.
The commitment of MÉS for Mallorca
Alzamora recalled that MÉS per Mallorca has proposed to the Mallorca Council the transfer of land transport powers with the aim of improving mobility on the island. According to the spokesman, this is the only way to design and implement a sustainable and integrated public transport system, which takes into account the needs of residents and which includes the network of Mallorca Railway Services.
Alzamora has concluded by affirming that the PP’s change of discourse regarding the decline is only a response strategy to the growing public opposition, and not a genuine desire for change in tourism policies.
