A memorable retirement
Jesús Alturo, renowned professor of Palaeography, Codicology and Diplomacy at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), has celebrated his retirement with a revelation that has surprised many. In an academic event at the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC), more than a hundred people, including personalities from the cultural, ecclesiastical and political worlds, attended his last lesson as a university professor.

In his latest conference, entitled “Read in very old letters”, Jesús Alturo has shared the results of his research in different archives of cities in Catalonia, Spain and France about the grammarian Guibert, a key figure in medieval Catalan culture. Alturo highlighted the cultural imprint left by Guibert on the territory and his contribution to literary works that had been attributed to other authors.
Collaboration and disappearance
Alturo has also revealed Guibert’s close collaboration with Bishop Oliba and his participation in the drafting of the constitutions of Peace and Truce, which were fundamental to counteract the violence exercised by the feudal nobles against the peasants. In addition, he has speculated about the public disappearance of Guibert and the possible reasons behind this fact.
