Reflections on immigration and economics
In a context of intense debate, it has been a business association, far from any suspicion of radicalism, which emphasized the importance of immigration. PIMEC, which represents the small and medium -sized businesses in Catalonia, recently celebrated a day dedicated to analyzing the ‘opportunities and challenges of migratory flows’.
Antoni Cañete, President of Pimec, said that “immigration not only benefits people, but also a wealth engine for the countries that host it”. He emphasized that small businesses are difficult to find qualified professionals, and that immigration can be the solution to this problem.
Demography: a necessary challenge
The current demographic presents a dilemma: closing us with immigration could lead to a slow fall of the population, as experienced countries such as Russia or Japan. However, opening the doors to new inhabitants can revitalize our demographic structure, as it has been observed in Catalonia and in other regions of the European Union.
Unfortunately, for many, immigration is a matter of survival, fleeing conflicts and repression. Our ethical responsibility forces us to offer reception and support. In addition, many immigrants are looking for employment opportunities to improve their economic situation and help their families who have been left behind.
Perspectives of demographic growth
A recent Idescat report provides that the Catalan population will reach 8.5 million inhabitants for 2034, with immigration as the main factor of this growth, as natural growth is expected to be negative. This new demographic reality demands a preparation to meet the needs of housing, education and health.
Historically, Catalonia has undergone great demographic changes. Between 2000 and 2010, the population grew significantly, while in recent years the increase has been more moderate. The immigrant population, from various regions, has been here for a long time and has found its place in society.
Integration: a necessary process
The integration of different cultures always presents challenges, but the story shows that these processes can be successful. In Catalonia, the Muslim community has grown in number and diversity, with about 350,000 inhabitants, less than 5% of the total population. Cultural differences can lead to tensions, but experience teaches us that over time, communities learn to live together.
The key to harmonious coexistence lies in patience, empathy and understanding. Spaces such as schools, jobs and friendships are essential for integration. In the future, Catalonia is likely to become a more cohesive society, with a rich and diverse culture.
A shared future
Demographic growth, as Pimec acknowledged, is essential for the Catalan economy. Last year, the economy grew by 3.6%, surpassing other regions. Confidence in new generations, especially among young Muslims, is key to the internal transformation of Islam to a more tolerant and inclusive version.
In order to achieve this change, it is essential to foster dialogue and mutual understanding. Hostil attitudes, such as those observed in some politicians, only obstruct the integration process that, over time, will become inevitable. The horizon is a future where cultural diversity becomes a shared wealth.
