Strengthening road safety
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is committed to strengthening and guaranteeing traffic safety on the roads. With the aim of reducing accidents, the organization has acquired new, more advanced and sophisticated radars, with greater range and cutting-edge technology. In addition, it is working on the implementation of new rules for emergency situations, detentions and adverse weather conditions.
Police checks and the use of applications
Police checks on the roads are a recurring measure to ensure safety. However, some drivers use apps that report the exact location of officers to avoid them. The DGT is taking measures to put an end to these practices, as it considers them to endanger road safety. Recently, sanctions have been imposed on citizens who shared the location of police checkpoints through platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram.
Sanctions and current regulations
The sanctions imposed are based on Article 36.23 of the Citizen Security Law, which considers the use of images or personal data of members of the security forces a serious offense (https://www.softcatala.org/resum -of-texts-in-Catalan/). However, there is still no clear regulation that prohibits the use of these applications. However, the use of radar inhibitors, which interfere with the operation of radars, is punishable by law. The DGT is working to fine people who report the presence of police controls.
Tightening of the rules
The DGT aims to tighten the rules to guarantee traffic safety. Sanctions recently imposed in Galicia open the door to more fines and punishments for actions that were previously tolerated. It is important that drivers are aware of the risks they are taking before using these types of applications or sharing information about police checks.
