The recovery of an unknown fortress

Archaeologists have managed to recover the remains of the castle of Montagut de Llagostera, located in the Cadiretes massif, in the demarcation of Girona. This castle, of which very little is known due to the lack of written documentation, is located on a private site and excavations began only three years ago. Its chronology is between the 10th and 14th centuries, and archaeological work has made it possible to know more details about its structure.

The historical and cultural importance of the site

Located at the top of a hill near the road that connects Llagostera with Cala Salionç de Tossa, Montagut Castle is considered a Cultural Property of National Interest (BCIN). Despite their historical and cultural relevance, the remains were abandoned until recently, and the Llagostera City Council began a process to recover and consolidate the vestiges from 2021. The various excavation campaigns have made it possible to clearly visualize the floor plan of the castle and have also revealed elements related to the daily life of the fortress.

Recognition of medieval life

Montagut Castle is presented as a modest but strategic structure, which was used as a fortified castle during feudalism. Despite its relative modesty, it had strategic importance for controlling the territory. Archaeological findings have confirmed the existence of a rectangular main hall attached to a circular tower, as well as ceramic fragments and other objects that provide an insight into what life was like in this medieval fortress.

Museumization and future of the remains

Llagostera City Council is working to turn the remains of Montagut Castle into a museum and turn the space into a site that can be visited. This includes projects to preserve and restore the remains so that they can be appreciated by the public. In addition, the adaptation of the environment is planned to allow safe access for visitors and to promote knowledge and understanding of the history of this ancient fortress.
