The fight against drought in Catalonia
The drought situation in Catalonia is worrying. For several months, the Catalan territory has been facing the effects of climate change and possible associated restrictions. Every time a drop of rain falls in the country, it becomes a cause for celebration. The spokesperson for the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Patrícia Plaja, has expressed her joy at the rains of recent days, but she has also warned about the importance of not distorting the reality of the drought in Catalonia.
Improving the situation of the reservoirs
Although the rains have allowed the situation of the reservoirs to improve and break the downward trend of the summer, the drought continues to be a cause for concern. According to Patrícia Plaja, the rainy episode has been the most significant since autumn 2021, and has benefited reservoirs such as Darnius Boadella, Riudecanyes and Siurana. These reservoirs have experienced an increase in their reserves, with Darnius being the one that has recorded the largest increase, reaching 12.5%. Siurana and Riudecanyes have also experienced more modest increases, of 0.1%.
Maintaining restrictions
Despite improvements in reservoirs and rainfall, Patrícia Plaja has emphasized that it is not yet time to lift measures against drought. Although the data shows an improvement compared to last week or early March, the spokesperson for the Generalitat of Catalonia has highlighted the importance of maintaining exceptional measures. Only if current levels are maintained can reversing restrictions be considered. However, Ella Plaja warns that there is no point in taking a step forward if you then retreat. No specific date has been established to exit the drought emergency situation in Catalonia.
