A storm that transforms the weather landscape

The arrival of storm Caetano has marked a drastic change in the weather conditions in Spain since the early hours of the morning. This atmospheric disturbance is generating an adverse panorama that is affecting large areas of the country, causing strong winds, localized rain and rough seas that threaten coastal areas.

Extreme conditions: winds and rough seas

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) had anticipated the arrival of this front. Currently, the northern and eastern regions of the Peninsula are the most affected, with provinces such as Tarragona, Castelló and Girona registering wind gusts that can reach 90 km/h, according to the data collected.

In the Balearic Islands, Mallorca and Menorca are also affected by this phenomenon, with weather alerts for moderate risks. On the other hand, the interior areas of the east of the country do not escape the intense winds, with gusts exceeding 80 km/h.

The maritime situation, particularly in the Cantabrian Sea, is alarming, with waves that can reach between 4 and 5 meters, presenting an extremely dangerous scenario for navigation.

Rainfall: less amount, but significant

Although the wind and swell capture the attention, the rain is also making an appearance, especially in the northern regions. Areas such as Galicia, the Cantabrian arc, the Alt Ebro and the Pyrenees are the most affected, with precipitation remaining constant in the eastern Cantabrian. Navarre and the Basque Country are the communities that could accumulate more than 40 liters per square meter in a 12-hour period.

Nine communities on alert: combined risks

Currently, nine autonomous communities have activated weather warnings. Most of these wind warnings are at yellow level, with Tarragona standing out with an orange warning due to gusts of up to 90 km/h. The Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Aragon and the Valencian Community are preparing to face the greatest risks associated with the winds.

Regarding the maritime storm, a large part of the Spanish coast is under yellow warning. The coasts of Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country, as well as the Mediterranean areas of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the eastern coast of Andalusia (Granada and Almeria), are on alert. Navarra and the Basque Country have also activated yellow level rain warnings.

Safety tips before the storm

Authorities have issued recommendations for the population, urging them to avoid unnecessary travel to the most affected areas. In regions with strong winds, it is essential to secure all objects that could be swept away. Caution is also urged when driving on roads that could be affected by these conditions.

In coastal areas, it is recommended to stay away from the sea and follow the instructions of Civil Protection. The AEMET has stressed the importance of following updates to avoid additional risks. This meteorological instability is expected to persist at least until Thursday, with the possibility of intensification in some areas.
