A Unique Celebration in Rome
On May 25 and 26, the city of Rome will host the first World Children’s Day, called by Pope Francis, which hopes to gather around 70,000 children. This event, according to the prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, brings to the fore the importance of the little ones and radiates hope for the Church and human society. It is also seen as a symbol of communion and an opportunity to promote unity and peace.
Participation and Program
During these two days, the congregation of various groups, associations and individuals is planned in Rome, as well as the realization of initiatives at the diocesan level. The coordinator of the day, Fr. Enzo Fortunato, o.f.m., emphasizes that this event invites us to contemplate the world from the perspective of children, who represent the hope and future of society.
The first day will include the inauguration of the Children’s Village, followed by activities in the Olympic Stadium. The opening event will feature a procession of children dressed in traditional clothing, representing 101 nations and carrying a message of peace. In addition, there will be the greeting of the Cardinal of Mendonça and the interpretation of the anthem of the day, by maestro Marco Frisina and performed by the Zecchino d’Oro choir and the Galassia dell’Antoniano choirs, with the participation of about 1,500 child singers. Afterwards, various artistic performances, shows, songs, reflections and testimonies will be presented.
On the second day, in Plaça de Sant Pere, a mass presided over by Pope Francis will take place, preceded by the entrance of some children in traditional costumes. After the Angelus, the actor Roberto Benigni will offer a monologue. In addition, the president of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo, will address the issue of peace, highlighting the presence of children who have arrived in Italy thanks to humanitarian corridors. Next, two young students from Nigeria and Afghanistan will share their testimonies.
