Analysis of Psychological Constructs in Military Personnel

A postgraduate study carried out at the University of La Rioja by José Gabriel Soriano Sánchez has investigated the psychological aspects of emotional intelligence, empathy, resilience and self-esteem in military personnel of the Spanish Army. The thesis, entitled ‘Evaluation of Psychological Aspects in Members of the Spanish Army’, was carried out within the framework of the 283D Doctorate in Education and Psychology program of the Department of Educational Sciences, under the direction of Sylvia Sastre i Riba and has received an outstanding grade ‘cum laude’.

Results of the investigation

The research was carried out through a survey of 739 Spanish soldiers of different ranks, aged between 18 and 66 years. We sought to identify possible differences in the levels of emotional intelligence, empathy, resilience and self-esteem based on variables such as gender, consumer habits, participation in international missions, marital status, educational level, years of military service, among others.

Additionally, the relationship between these psychological constructs and variables such as age, number of children, and international missions carried out was explored. The findings show the positive influence of resilience on emotional intelligence, empathy and self-esteem, and how these in turn influence emotional intelligence.

Implications in Military Training and Development

The results of the thesis offer important guidelines for the design of military training and training programs that consider the relevance of these psychological aspects in the personnel of the Spanish Army, in order to promote greater well-being and the achievement of key institutional objectives. .

Today’s demands in the military require effective role management, as well as adaptive responses to changing and sometimes high-risk situations. Therefore, emphasis is placed on the importance of cultivating emotional intelligence, empathy, resilience and self-esteem to strengthen the cognition, socio-emotional skills and behavior of military personnel, since these positive psychological resources help mitigate self-esteem and reduce the appearance of manifestations. psychopathologies, such as anxiety and depression.
