The port of Tarragona and its commercial dynamics
The activity of the Port of Tarragona is in a crucial moment waiting for the decisions of the European Union on the tariffs imposed by the United States. Santiago Castellà, President of the Infrastructure, said that the impact on exports would be limited, since they only represent 1.1% of the total number of goods managed.
Imports and their importance
United States imports are a significant part of the port trade, with 16.8% of the total number of goods. Most of the products that come are petrochemicals, agri -foods and building materials. Thus, the increase in tariffs could have a more severe impact on imports than on exports.
Numbers that speak
In 2024, more than 5.3 million tonnes of goods from the U.S. reached the Tarragona port, while exports amounted to 356,565 tonnes, focused on chemicals and construction materials.
Concerns about commercial policy
Castilian has expressed his concern about Donald Trump’s trade policy, which is altering global markets and breaking the rules that previously guaranteed an orderly trade. This situation generates unfair competition and geopolitical destabilization that harms Europe.
The look at the futur
The President of the Port expects the trade war to continue and that the world will become more chaotic and dangerous. Spanish emphasizes that this dynamic could strengthen the interests of powers such as China and Russia, while Europe would be weakened.
Fostering new business relationships
On the other hand, a delegation from the Chinese city of Qinyang recently visited Tarragona to explore possible collaborations. With Mayor Rubén Viñuales and other local representatives, the delegation learned of the potential of the territory in technological, chemical and tourist sectors.
Investment opportunities
The Mayor of Qinyang, Ji Jun Zhou, expressed interest in investing in Catalonia and invited the Tarragona representatives to a commercial event in his city, which could mark the beginning of a fruitful relationship between the two regions.
Final reflections on global trade
The current situation of international trade requires constant adaptation by ports such as Tarragona, which must navigate in a context of constant change. The ability to attract new investments and establish strategic alliances will be essential to facing the challenges of the future.
