A legacy that endures
The black and white images that adorned the window of the Gaudí bookstore in Reus bear witness to a story that began on February 13, 1965. In a context of political repression, this establishment was born with the mission of promoting Catalan culture, becoming a refuge for those who defended the language and identity.
Adapting to a changing world
Six decades later, the bookstore has not only survived, but has found innovative ways to thrive in an increasingly competitive environment, marked by the rise of online sales and the presence of large chains. Montsant Fonts, one of the owners, highlights the experience accumulated over the years: ‘We are here thanks to 60 years of dedication and craft,’ she says proudly.
A start full of challenges
The early years were not easy. Fonts explains that the commitment to Catalan literature was hampered by a limited market and the surveillance of the Franco regime. His father, Isidre Fonts, a committed activist, lived in constant fear of reprisals, with police officers monitoring his movements.
Transformation of the publishing sector
With the end of the dictatorship, the bookstore underwent a significant change. Fonts recalls that the publishing offer was diversified and that the availability of books improved significantly. ‘At that time, people needed books, and now we can offer them with surprising speed,’ he points out.
Current challenges
Recently, Gaudí has faced new obstacles with the logistics optimization of distributors, which caused significant delays in deliveries. Fonts defines it as ‘a dramatic situation’ that has affected many bookstores in the country.
The value of local commerce
In Reus, there are only two bookstores left that are dedicated exclusively to selling books, a situation that contrasts with the arrival of commercial chains. However, Fonts states that Gaudí has maintained its clientele and that sales during the Christmas campaign have been positive.
Fight against online sales
Fonts also comments on the competition that online sales pose. ‘Some people prefer to buy on Amazon without leaving home, forgetting that local bookstores bring life to the neighborhood,’ he reflects. However, he acknowledges that the improvement in the logistics of distributors has benefited everyone.
A special relationship with customers
The Gaudí bookstore has built a loyal customer base over the years. ‘Our customers know us and value the personalized service we offer,’ emphasizes Fonts. ‘It is a pride to celebrate 60 years of history, and we will continue working for culture and literature in Catalan.’
