The government of the Balearic Islands and the situation of the Catalan language

by PREMIUM.CAT

Introduction

Since the formation of the current government of the Balearic Islands, chaired by Marga Prohens of the Popular Party with the support of the extreme right, decisions have been taken that affect the Catalan language. These decisions have caused concern and have endangered the presence and normalization of the language in various areas of society.

Attacks on the Catalan language

From the same day that the Partit Popular and VOX signed the governance agreements, threats against the Catalan language began to be seen. These agreements forced the Popular Party to take more restrictive measures in linguistic matters than they had promised during the elections. Of the 110 programmatic points that will guide government action, 11 refer to education and language, and 5 of these points represent a direct attack on the Catalan language. These measures seek to minimize the presence of Catalan in areas such as education, public service and institutional and administrative language uses.

Energizing the political consensus

The Popular Party has endangered the political consensus that had allowed progress in language normalization. Although other political parties have also pushed for progress in this area, the Popular Party has broken this consensus by allying itself with the extreme right to stay in power. This decision has generated a setback in the progress that had been achieved so far.

The defense of the Catalan language

Faced with these attacks on the Catalan language, the Balearic Cultural Work has been denouncing them and proposing measures to reverse this situation. This entity has used all the resources at its disposal, including legal actions, to protect and promote the Catalan language. Attacks on the language have occurred in areas such as health, the public service and especially in education, endangering the normal use of Catalan.

Call for the defense of the language

The Obra Cultural Balearic has called on citizens to mobilize and defend the Catalan language. With the support of more than 60 entities and associations, a demonstration has been organized to express the commitment to the language and to demand that the public authorities comply with their statutory and legal obligations to promote the Catalan language. This call seeks to ensure that Catalan has a prominent presence in all areas of public life.

conclusion

It is important to defend the Catalan language and guarantee its presence in society. The attacks that are taking place endanger the normality and vitality of the language. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect and promote the Catalan language so that it continues to be a fundamental part of our identity and culture.
