Conditions for the return of the driving license

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has issued a crucial notice aimed at drivers who are obliged to return their driving license in certain circumstances.

The situations that require the return of the card can vary from serious transgressions to matters of a personal nature, according to the DGT.

Violations and procedures to return the card

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is some of the most common reasons for losing a driver’s license, according to authorities.

In these cases, the driver must go to the corresponding Traffic office and hand in the card. It should be emphasized that driving without the appropriate documentation can result in fines of up to 6,000 euros or prison sentences.

Other reasons for returning the card

Another situation that involves returning the card is when a loss or theft is reported. If a duplicate copy is obtained and the original is later found, the copy must be returned to the DGT within a maximum of 15 days.

Failure to comply with this guideline can result in a crime of document fraud, punishable by 3 to 6 years in prison.

Consequences of not passing the medical and psychotechnical examinations

Failing the health and psychological aptitude tests that assess the driver’s abilities implies the withdrawal of the license, in addition to a possible temporary suspension of at least 6 months.

Convictions for offenses related to road safety or refusal to take breathalyzer tests can result in disqualifications. In addition, foreign drivers resident in Spain for more than 6 months must pass a new driving test to obtain a local license.

Commitment of the DGT and the legal repercussions

The DGT highlights the situations that require the return of the driving license clearly. Driving without a license not only endangers road safety, but can also have severe legal and financial consequences.

It is important to remember that driving licenses have an expiry date and are valid for 10 years for private drivers. Renewal of the card must be done in person at the corresponding Traffic office.

In the event of a change of residence to another province, it is mandatory to notify the DGT of the new location within 15 days. You must apply for a new card with the updated data at the Traffic office to avoid possible financial penalties.
