A notice about the dismay

Ramon Espadaler, Minister of Justice and Democratic Memory, has highlighted the growing concern for the dismay, especially in relation to the Spanish Civil War. Recently, a study by the Institute of Political and Social Sciences has revealed that 16.5% of young people under the age of 25 could accept an authoritarian regime, a fact that Espadaler considers alarming.

From Flix, and coinciding with the Third International Congress on the Civil War in the Terres de l’Ebre, the counselor emphasized the importance of educating new generations about the value of democracy, emphasizing that this is not a gift but a right that must be defended.

A new vision of the story

Antonio Sánchez, a professor at the University of Granada, emphasized the need to incorporate the gender perspective in the study of history. According to him, while historiography recognizes the role of women during the Civil War, traditional history often ignores these contributions. This new vision can enrich the understanding of our past.

Feminine presentations and voices

The Congress, which includes 28 presentations and 15 communications, promotes female voices, with a good number of presentations by women experts in the war.

The danger of misinformation

In a world where misinformation is becoming more and more prevalent, academics are alerting to the consequences for society. Professor Llop has expressed his concern about the way younger generations can value ‘dismaying’, which can lead to a lack of knowledge about historical events.

Events such as the Congress held in the Terres de l’Ebre seek to combat this tendency through historical research, with the aim of making the truths of the past accessible to the entire population.

Community activities and participation

Despite being an academic congress, it has opened to the community, offering visits to spaces of historical memory. Espadaler said that bringing history closer to new generations is essential and can be performed through education, health, culture and language.

A congress in the four counties

For the first time, the sessions of the congress have been held at the headquarters of the four counties of the territory, beginning in Tortosa with presentations on the forced displacements and the role of sport during the war. Flix and Gandesa have continued with activities focused on the nurses of the international brigades and the preservation of cultural heritage.

A closing with reflection

The III International Congress on the Civil War in the Terres de l’Ebre will conclude in La Sénia on April 12, with visits to the Interpretation Center of the Historical Aviation Camp. With the participation of fifty academics from various parts of the world, this congress not only seeks to deepen historical knowledge, but also to foster a necessary debate on democratic memory.
