Trends in influenza transmission
Catalonia is experiencing a notable increase in flu cases, with a rate of 294 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, thus exceeding moderate transmission levels. The latest data from the Information System for Infection Surveillance in Catalonia (SIVIC) indicate that this trend has remained constant in recent weeks.
Expectations of infections and recommendations
Jacobo Mendioroz, deputy general director of Epidemiological Surveillance, has expressed his prediction that infections could reach their peak in the coming days. In addition, he stressed the importance of protecting the elderly, a group that needs higher vaccine coverage, especially in a season that promises superior vaccine effectiveness against circulating strains.
Analysis of the current situation
The flu, although circulating intensely, is in a less severe phase than in previous years. Mendioroz has observed that the increase in infections this year has started later, which may delay the epidemic peak, unlike in past seasons. SIVIC data also indicate that during the previous winter the highest infections were registered during the first days of January.
Vaccination statistics
Vaccination figures among the elderly indicate that 64% of those over 80 and 51% of those aged 70 to 79 have received the flu vaccine. However, vaccination rates against Covid-19 are lower, at 55% and 40% respectively for these age groups. The current vaccination campaign is being carried out simultaneously with the Covid-19 one, focusing on those at higher risk of complications.
Impact of respiratory viruses
In addition to influenza, the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) shows stability with 103 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is an indication of the end of the ascending phase of its epidemic. This is the second year that infants have been immunized against RSV, resulting in a significantly lower impact compared to previous seasons.
Pressure on healthcare services
Hospitals in Catalonia, such as Joan XXIII in Tarragona, have indicated that they can still manage the increase in patients, although there is an increase in activity. On the other hand, in Terres de l’Ebre, the number of patients with respiratory pathologies is high, but the situation remains under control.
Final thoughts on the flu
Although no extraordinary measures have been planned, Minister Sílvia Paneque has reiterated the need for vaccination for the most vulnerable people. The health community insists on the importance of protecting those who are most susceptible to complications and on the need to change social perception about the impact of the flu on the elderly population.
