Catalonia: A Growing Destiny
During the month of April, Catalonia experienced a notable increase in the number of international passengers who arrived by air, according to data published by Turespaña. In total, the region received 1.87 million international passengers, reflecting an increase of 14.7% compared to the same month of the previous year. This positive trend was seen especially at Barcelona airport, where 1.73 million passengers landed, representing an increase of 12.1% compared to April 2023.
Rise of Low Cost Airlines
The results for the month of April highlighted the significant increase in low-cost airlines, which played a key role in this increase in international tourism in Catalonia. Low-cost companies transported 1.34 million passengers, reflecting a growth of 15.6% compared to the previous year and representing 24.1% of the State’s total. This consolidates Catalonia as the main destination for users of these airlines, followed by the Balearic Islands and Andalusia.
Diversity of Passengers
On the other hand, 529,797 international travelers arrived in Catalonia through traditional companies, reflecting an increase of 12.5%. This diversity of passengers, both through low-cost and traditional airlines, highlights Barcelona’s position as a tourist attraction, being a favorite destination for both tourists and business travelers.
Catalonia: A Favorite Destination of Foreigners
Catalonia continues to be one of the preferred destinations for foreigners, as the number of tourists who visited the region in April 2023 was equivalent to 21.2% of the total for the entire State. At national level, the number of international passengers increased by 8.8% compared to the previous year, reflecting a strong growth in tourism throughout Spain.
